In the weeks following fruit set, the vine canopy surges forward, wrapping the rows in a dense wall of foliage. But in the production of fine estate wine, abundance is not the objective. Exceptional character often begins with the art of subtraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walking our estate Merlot rows this week, the work was defined by canopy management and suckering<sup><\/sup>. At this stage, the young grape clusters are still firm, compact, and electric green<sup><\/sup>. Left unmanaged, a vine will naturally push more shoots and fruit than it can evenly ripen<sup><\/sup>. To ensure our estate Merlot achieves the depth, freshness, and structural balance we demand, we intervene by hand<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-b5246eb1 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.crosbyroamann.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_1609-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-4229\" width=\"3024\" height=\"4032\" title=\"IMG_1609\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We methodically thin the vines\u2014removing secondary shoots, lateral growth, and crowded clusters<sup><\/sup>. Looking down the freshly worked rows, the proof of that discipline is striking: a vibrant carpet of discarded leaves and vegetative growth resting on the sandy loam soil below<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dropping so much healthy growth can look drastic, but the viticultural purpose is vital<sup><\/sup>. Clearing the fruit zone opens the canopy to the cool afternoon breezes of southern Napa Valley, encouraging air circulation and welcoming filtered sunlight<sup><\/sup>. More importantly, it forces the vine to redirect its energy away from excessive leaves and into a deliberate, limited crop<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This physical, exacting work under the June sun exemplifies our vineyard philosophy: sacrificing yield for purity, concentration, and longevity<sup><\/sup>.
